Review: You’re So Cool (Vol. 02)

Manhwa-ga: YoungHee Lee
Publisher: Yen Press
Rating: Teen (13+)
Released: September 2008

Synopsis: “Nan-woo’s in deep trouble… Seung-Ha’s got his sights set on making his ‘girlfriend’ dance in the palm of his hand solely for his own amusement. But if that’s all it is, why does he bare his (perfectly straight, white and brilliant) teeth at Chan-Gyu, who still has feelings for Nan-Woo and wants her for himself?!”

Nan-woo continues to deal with Seung-Ha, whose tight grip on her at school still remains. Be it denying her food or ordering her around, there seems to be no break from his orders. But when another classmate returns to try and confess his feelings to Nan-Woo, suddenly Seung-Ha seems extra possessive.

I was a little disappointed with Seung-Ha here in volume two as he just didn’t feel as sinister as he did in the first. I suppose after all that, however, he doesn’t need to do as much to keep Nan-Woo under his dangerous double-sided boot. She knows to run when she sees him coming, if she can get away with it (a difficult feat as several attempts here show). We see a different but not completely unexpected side to Seung-Ha, as he becomes very possessive of his new plaything, especially when another classmate continues to show interest in the spunky little Nan-Woo after an abrupt turn-down in volume one.

As for You’re So Cool’s lead, I still like Nan-Woo as a character. She’s stuck in Seung-Ha’s little trap but she does so kicking and screaming the whole way. I enjoy her outbursts and tenacity and because I find her so likeable as a main character, I can’t help but feel sympathetic to her plight dealing with the jerk. Not easy being the only one who knows the perfect student’s alter ego. She’s rightfully confused by his actions, that scream ulterior-motive, and I admire her tolerance and often kindness, which she manages by venting through some vicious vegetable chopping at home.

Another part of the story, which I continue to find absolutely loveable, is Nan-Woo’s older brother, Jay. How does a man manage to be so positively adorable?! He’s cute, naive and hopelessly heartbroken after another failed relationship, but he makes for an excellent, happy housewife to his two siblings. It’s no wonder that when he invites over his new found acquaintance, Hyun-Ho, that he makes the guy a little more than awkward. The sibling interactions between Jay and Nan-Woo were short but very sweet and I look forward to seeing how Nan-Woo’s problems and Jay’s new friend are suddenly going to become related plot-wise.

Ultimately, while I didn’t find this second volume of You’re So Cool as fun as the first, it was still a nice continuation. The pace has slowed some but I’ve no doubt that the two-faced Seung-Ha is going to keep making things interesting for poor, stressed Nan-Woo. And if that couple’s entertaining interactions weren’t enough, there’s always more of her adorable older brother to look forward to. I’m happily anticipating volume three.
