Avatar: The Last Airbender

Originally written sometime last week, this post suffers from forgot-about-it-itis:

It’s no exageration that I’m a huge fan of Nickelodeon’s recently finished animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. As one of the most original and well-animated shows to play on television in my memory, I’ll forever be impressed and amazed by the creative team behind it and their visual and story-telling prowess that brought the unique series to life. You can see some screenshots of the multiple characters and gorgeous background paintings thanks to a “visual essay” of the series here.

That said, casting news of its upcoming live-action movie has created more than a little stir, a ripple of disbelief, that reaches far beyond its loyal fanbase.  This of course comes from the fact that the entire cast of this live-action movie are caucasian. As a series starring pre-dominantly Asian characters in beautifully rendered Asian locales, this doesn’t only seem completely inaccurate but also unneccessary. Is it to say there aren’t any talented ethnic actors and actresses out there? Because goodness knows that isn’t true.

Manga Quickies

Since I read more manga than I write full reviews for (aka, jobs and school have been doing a good job sucking all my writing time up), I figured it’d was time to adopt some good ideas and do the occasional mini-thoughts on what I’m reading now. Also, if anyone can suggest a name for said posts, feel free to share your ideas. The simple brilliance of Manga Minis is already in use by a talented crew and I’m not sure how attached to the name Manga Quickies I am yet ;)

Monster (Vol. 11)Monster (Vol. 11) – Viz – I finally continued reading this series recently, years after I initially read the first volume and loved it. Somehow it just always escaped my radar. But a couple more volumes and I’m hooked, always looking for the next fix. Now up to volume 11, I was blown away by a plot twist that I didn’t see coming, even if it is a little obvious in hindsight. Just when you think things are coasting in one direction, they veer sharply into another. Naoki Urusawa’s ability to weave every character, large or small, into the plot also remains nothing short of incredible. (Available now on Amazon.ca/Amazon.com)

The Best of Pokemon Adventures: RedThe Best of Pokemon Adventures: RedVizKids – I couldn’t help but pick this one up because I’m currently in a big nostalgic-Pokemon kick (where’s my Gameboy?!) and I loved this adorable version of the manga when it was initially released in large format stiff-covers by Viz years ago. The art style is still ridiculously cute and I love how it contrasts to some plotlines and events that still manage to be a little darker than what the television show offered (Pokemon die and trainers get attacked, oh no!). My only complaint about the book is that it’s a ‘best of’ compilation, which means that readers, both new and old, will easily get tripped up when reading these chronological stories and random episodes are missing. I don’t see why they didn’t just release the whole series into two books instead of a one-shot best of book, there’s not much else to it than what’s here and I’d love to have it all in such a tidy little format. (Available now on Amazon.ca/Amazon.com)

* * * * * *

The Best of Pokemon Adventures: YellowThe Best of Pokemon Adventures: Yellow VizKids - I couldn’t buy a book about Pokemon trainer, Red, and not the best-of book of Yellow! I’ve got a soft spot for this cute little trainer. Yellow is a young, unabashedly cute Pokemon trainer with the ability to heal Pokemon and read their memories. After Red goes missing, Yellow is charged with the mission of bringing him home safely along with the help of Red’s Pikachu and Yellow’s own assortment of dedicated Pokemon. The Elite Four is the real threat in this storyline as their leader Lance plots his world domination-of-sorts and all the old players return to take the four down. I had the same issue with this book as with Red’s, where it’s a little confusing reading a best-of for a short series since it feels like I’m reading a compilation with missing chapters over a carefully selected assortment. And despite being “best of”, they leave out the explanatory chapter with the big Yellow plot twist. Such a shame, I was sure that would at least qualify as a best-of. Review: Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service (Vol. 8)

Author: Eiji Otsuka
Manga-ka: Housui Yamazaki
Publisher: Dark Horse
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: January 2009

Synopsis: “Shigo kekkon – marrying the dead! It’s a quaint old country custom in Japan that’s becoming the next big fad in Tokyo… and that makes it the business of the Corpse Delivery Service! And meanwhile, back on campus, since they’re technically a college club, the kids from Kurosagi host a membership drive during the school festival! But you’ve got to like corpses, you know.”

What I continue to find most enthralling about Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service is its subtleties, the kind of moments that can often be overlooked, but when noticed, add their own kind of impact to a scene. Whether its a certain kind of smile on Karatsu’s face or the independent Sasaki’s neck wrapping after an incident, instead of being hit over the head with these characters, we instead learn more about them gradually over time. Through all their actions, both big and small, readers come to know these characters are people and it makes it all the more engrossing to read.

Sense and Sexuality Update

Categories: Licensing, Manga, Yaoi/Boys' Love

As a follow-up to my Yaoi Minis for January 24th post, Kitty Media’s new title Sense and Sexuality is by Higashino You. Also, I forgot to mention that the description included in the AAAanime listing isn’t for this series, but it does have a cover image for the April yaoi release.

Baka-Updates has the following synopsis for the story:

“Hanamura Masatsugu and Takakura Kuniomi are intimate friends since childhood, and both are heirs to their respective marquises. Their favorite sport is seeing who can score the next bishounen that comes across their path in the Imperial Capital. And now Kuniomi has set his eyes on a new target…!?”

Manga-ka: Kazuto Okada
Publisher: Yen Press
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: January 2009

Synopsis: “When Kurumi and Hideo are left alone in the “Roman Club” classroom, Kurumi makes a special “request” of Hideo… From that moment on, Hideo’s dull life gets far more…frustrating. The climax builds as Kurumi says she wants to visit Hideo’s house. Now the Aiba family is in an uproar over their son bringing his first girl home!!”

It’s more of the same and then some in this fourth volume of Sundome with the sexual encounters of Hideo and Kurumi becoming more frequent and more daring. Kurumi lets Hideo have a little more each time, moving forward their physical relationship but never crossing the simplest of lines. Hideo’s fetish for her grows as the story continues, one that could easily turn the stomachs of some and stimulate more than the curiousty of others.

Yaoi Minis for January 24th

Always lots of yaoi

Some boys’ love links of interest tonight:

BLU forums are pointing the way to Tokyopop’s site where you can view some preview pages for the upcoming and long-awaited fourth volume of Black Knight. Pretty artwork awaits you!

Some exciting news over at the Yaoi Generation forums where the staff had this to say:

“We’re also wrapping up a couple new licenses! Yay! We’ll be announcing it soon… well, soonish… hehe.. It’s not one of the suggested ones though. We’ve been working on getting these upcoming licenses since middle of last year, and it’s finally nearing completion, so we’re very excited!”

So much for waiting until the end of their first series, breath, before diving into others. But who am I kidding, I’m happy. Here’s hoping they handle it well and we get some more quality work. I was impressed with their first release and hope to be with future ones.

Deb Aoki’s Best of 2008 manga polls continue, including Best New Yaoi/Shonen-Ai Manga of 2008. It’s down to a race between the global boys’ love title ANIMA by Dany&Dany, and Ayano Yamane’s A Foreign Love Affair. Personally, I voted for Future Lovers, no contest my favourite on the list. Head over there and vote for your favorite and definitely check out any titles there you haven’t read yet. There’s some good ones for sure!

A new title from Kitty Media? Sense and Sexuality, with a release date listed for April 2009 (Edit: update). And how about a potentially new title from Deux Press? Have some Spicy But Sweet, a sequel to their already licensed Naughty But Nice. And from DMP, The Lonely Mgoytist (this one seems familiar to me but I can’t find news on it before my head hits the desk from sleepiness so apologies if this is repeat news).

Y!Gallery, aka YaoiGallery, the biggest online art community revolving around men, men and men on men, has recently had a big overhaul of their Rules and Terms of Use. One of the biggest changes includes the return of ‘furries’. Characters with strong animal characteristics were originally banned due to user complaints and a blurred line of beastiality. Site users are now given the option to filter their accounts so that furry art doesn’t show up for them. Other rule changes include no copyrighted material or work taken without permission being used for literature thumbnails (saving people like me a hundred headaches for clicking on what looks like really well done fanart only to find one of a million fanfics).

And finally, Tina Anderson and MTCopyright’s full-colour webcomic Whore of Turfan continues to update weekly with lots of shiny drama to look forward to every Friday! (Whoops, how’d this plug get here? ;) ) Seriously though, a strong start for the series from two talented individuals and I can’t wait to see where its going.

Review: Loveholic (Vol. 02)

Manga-ka: Toko Kawai
Publisher: DMP
Rating: Older Teen (16+)
Released: December 2008

Synopsis: “Daisuke Matsukawa and the up-and-coming young cameraman Kentaro Nishioka have developed from comrades who work well together into friends who are called lovers. But even though he’s sexy, the shy Nishioka is also obstinate and naughty. Poor Matsukawa has no idea where this love affair is headed.”

Though I’d read several of Toko Kawai’s work before, it’s never really clicked with me. Her art that always seems to have a certain retro-feel to it that I didn’t find appealing and her classically branded semes and ukes failed to offer me anything substantially unique for boys’ love. Despite my previous thoughts, I’d heard a great deal of good regarding her series Loveholic and decided to give it a go, leaping in at volume one and finding myself greeted by a pleasant surprise.

Review: Croquis Pop (Vol. 02)

Author: KwangHyn Seo
Manhwa-ga: JinHo Ko
Publisher: Yen Press
Rating: Teen (13+)
Released: June 2008

Synopsis: “As the studio erupts in chaoe over Ho Go’s new comic, one of his former students – Ga In – appears at the door! Da-Il, who ends up sharing his room with boss’s former protege, wakes p in the middle of the night to find his guest in the grip of a huge monster! Under attack himself, Da-Il is thrown into a stragic story from Ga-In’s past, where discovers that Mu-Huk can’t always save him and even superpowers have their limits.”

A lot more of the story’s key elements made much more sense to me here in the second volume of Croquis Pop. While the manhwa-ga, Ho Go, and his students make a fuss over his new comic starring themselves. the group are greeted with a surprise guest, an old student named Ga-In. It’s into the past of Ga-In that Da-Il finds himself next, the ‘Dead Zone’ which reflects the strong emotions of a person manifested into a place. Or atleast that seems to be the simpliest way I can figure it, much more concise than my confuddled thoughts after finishing the first book.
